The Chervonets is a Russian gold coin that originally meant any gold coin foreign or local and was used as de facto currency. The early coinage was consigned and minted outside of Russia and mainly used for tokens and awards, not necessarily for currency. In 1701 Russia minted the first official Chervonets as currency that were replaced in 1757 with the gold rubles containing a lower gold composition. The second appearance was in 1922 but failed due to political reasons, and in 1925 more were struck, but believed that all but one were melted down. In 1947 the system was abandoned, but the 10 ruble coins are still called Chervonets. The only gold coins of the Soviet Union until 1977, coins were minted between 1701 and 1977 and are extremely rare.
